Margaret (1936-2018) and Luther (1911-1987) Gutierrez were siblings from Santa Clara Pueblo who continued their parents' (Lela and Van Gutierrez) tradition of making polychrome pottery. They began collaborating in the 1960s, working with the unique color slips developed by their parents to create pieces decorated with traditional designs like the avanyu (water serpent), and later developed a signature style of painting whimsical animal figures. Their work was highly acclaimed and won numerous awards, and they are credited with helping to keep the polychrome style alive at the pueblo.
